Undergraduate Research Bursaries

A scheme funding short research projects to give undergraduates experience of mathematical research and encourage research careers. Awards are held at UK universities and administered via the host department, with supervisors applying on behalf of students. Bursaries run full-time for 6–8 weeks or part-time for 12–16 weeks and provide a weekly stipend at set rates depending on location. Institutions are required to administer awards and may be asked to provide match-funding.

Weekly stipend (£325/week outside London or £335/week in London) for the project duration; no National Insurance liability; award administered via host department.

By the summer of the award students must have completed at least two full academic years of an undergraduate degree in mathematics/statistics, be intending to continue in mathematics education, and be registered at a UK institution for the majority of their degree. Researchers in mathematics at UK universities and research institutions (including postdocs and new lecturers early in their careers) are eligible to apply as supervisors; applications must be made by the project supervisor on behalf of the student and signed by the Head of Department.

Project supervisors complete an online application form by the advertised deadline, including the student’s academic record, a supporting referee statement, and a signed Head of Department statement confirming administration and any match-funding.
