BHF 4-year PhD Programme

The BHF 4-year PhD Programme is a cohort-based funding scheme to support multidisciplinary cardiovascular research delivered by consortia of universities and optional industry partners. Consortia recruit cohorts of students into a 4-year programme where year 1 may include generic and specialist training and practical projects followed by a 3-year PhD project. The scheme funds student stipends, home-rate tuition fees, consumables, travel to meetings and partner visits, and requires individual BHF approval of recruited students and subsequent 3-year project outlines.

Applications must be submitted by a consortium of UK universities and may include industry partners, biotech, pharma or other commercial health-focused entities; consortia may include up to four partners and adopt a principal applicant model. After award, students recruited by consortia must be approved individually by BHF and individual 3-year PhD project outlines submitted for approval.

Submit an expression of interest via the BHF Grants Management System between 2025-01-13 and 2025-03-17. Approved EoIs invited to submit a full application via the Grants Management System between 2025-04-28 and 2025-07-07; the application must be completed by the proposed Programme Director with a supporting letter and declaration from a Senior Faculty member.
