St Andrews–Max Planck PhD Studentship in Population, Health and Data Science 2026

The St Andrews–Max Planck PhD Studentship offers a fully funded doctoral opportunity for international students to conduct research in population health and data science, with placements in Germany and the United Kingdom. The programme involves interdisciplinary work on social and environmental determinants of health across adolescence and emerging adulthood, with training in advanced quantitative methods and longitudinal analysis. It is jointly funded by the University of St Andrews and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR).

Salary during the Germany phase, research training support, data acquisition funding, travel funding, UK maintenance stipend, Research Training Support Grant (RTSG), and tuition fee waiver.

Applicants should possess an excellent Master’s degree with distinction, merit, or equivalent qualification in relevant disciplines and are encouraged if their background includes statistics, applied mathematics, population studies, sociology, public health, epidemiology, geography, economics, data science, demography or social sciences.
