Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Turning the Tide Masters Scholarship

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Turning the Tide Masters Scholarship is a full-time, research-based master's scholarship offered in partnership with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Scholarships are available for research topics in African Cultural Studies, The Anthropocene and Ecocriticism, and Identity, Gender and Queer Studies. The award supports master's research within the Faculty and may include funding for study fees, an allowance and research-related costs.

R170 000 total for two years; coverage of study fees and an allowance; possible funding for research activities such as a writing retreat, conference attendance and publication costs up to R19 189.

Applicants should have obtained a minimum of 75% for their previous degree and must provide a sample of writing (e.g. honours research essay or published academic articles). Applicants must not be older than 30 at the date of application and must apply to study at Stellenbosch University in addition to submitting the scholarship application.

Required documents include the official application form, a motivation letter (max 600 words), a preliminary research proposal (max 500 words), certified academic transcript, certified Honours degree certificate or equivalent proof, and certified ID or passport. A writing sample is also required.
