Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellowship Program

Fellowship
NIH Office of Intramural Research (OIR) / National Institutes of Health (NIH) États-Unis 2026

Informations

The Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellowship Program provides advanced training and practical research experiences at NIH facilities for individuals early in their research careers. Traineeships support work in a variety of disciplines related to biomedical research, medical library research, and related fields and are intended for developmental training rather than service or clinical residency. Training must be carried out at an NIH facility, though it may be supplemented by related training at another institution with Director approval. The program includes multiple tracks, including Postdoctoral, Pre-Doctoral (GPP and MRSP), Post-Baccalaureate, and Student (SIP) appointments.

Avantages

Advanced research training and practical research experience at NIH facilities across biomedical and related disciplines; traineeships established for the primary benefit of the participant. Positions are non-FTE and training may be supplemented by related external training with approval. IRTA Trainees may not independently engage in patient care or assume official supervisory responsibilities.

Conditions d'éligibilité

Opportunities are available for Postdoctoral, Pre-Doctoral (including GPP and MRSP), Post-Baccalaureate, and Student (SIP) candidates; the IRTA authority is exclusively for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Postdoctoral IRTAs are not available to scientists with more than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of their most recent doctoral degree; post-baccalaureate applicants include recent graduates and those deferring graduate/professional school entry as described.

Candidature

Applications and approvals follow NIH Policy Manual 2300-320-7 and the NIH intramural approval process; specific application procedures and approval requirements are detailed in that policy manual and associated OIR guidance.
