The UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) African PhD Studentships fund PhD research for candidates from eligible African countries to address global development challenges. Students are hosted at UK universities and undertake field research in their home countries. The studentships provide support for tuition, a UK PhD stipend and research-related costs. The programme is targeted at doctoral-level researchers.

Open to applicants from listed African countries (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (DRC), Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe) studying at the eligible level for a PhD studentship.
