Boren Awards for International Language Study

The Boren Awards provide scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who plan to study critical languages overseas and commit to public service. Boren Fellowships are for U.S. citizens in advanced degree programs to study critical languages abroad, while Boren Scholarships support undergraduates studying overseas languages; both require a language study focus and may include additional courses, research, or internships. The program covers up to $25,000 of overseas study costs, including airfare, housing, and tuition, with a post-program service commitment in the U.S. federal government.

U.S. citizens who are either undergraduate students seeking an overseas language study program (Scholarship) or graduate/doctoral students in advanced degree programs seeking overseas language study (Fellowship). Programs must be overseas and outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.
