FRESH and FRIA Doctoral Scholarships (F.R.S.-FNRS)

The FRESH and FRIA doctoral scholarships are competitive funding programmes administered by the F.R.S.-FNRS to support prospective researchers within the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. FRIA targets scientific, technical and exact/natural/medical research with potential industrial or agricultural applications, while FRESH supports research in the humanities and social sciences addressing societal challenges. Awardees receive a fixed-term employment contract at a Belgian university and funding for an initial two-year period renewable once after evaluation.

Monthly net stipend (~€2,400), employer social security and insurance contributions covered, annual research operating budget, possible funding for scientific missions abroad, fixed‑term employment contract at a Belgian university for an initial two years renewable once.

Candidates must hold a Master 120 issued by an institution of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles or have been resident in Belgium for at least three years at the time of application; must not have already received more than 24 months of doctoral funding; and must present an original research project validated by a university supervisor.

Submit the application online via the e-space platform during the summer; administrative eligibility check by FNRS services; scientific evaluation by independent international experts; oral interview before a specialist jury for shortlisted candidates.
