HHMI Investigator Program

The HHMI Investigator Program appoints established researchers as HHMI employees to pursue basic biological and biomedical research. Investigators receive an initial seven-year appointment (renewable indefinitely with successful review), full salary and benefits from HHMI while maintaining academic appointments and labs at their home institutions, and generous research support including access to HHMI’s capital equipment program. The program fosters inclusive lab leadership and membership in the HHMI scientific community.

Mid-career and senior faculty in a tenured or tenure-track (or equivalent) position at an HHMI-eligible institution with seven or more years of post-training lab head experience as of the application close, and who additionally hold one or more active, nationally competitive, non-training grants of three or more years in duration.

Competitive selection held every five years; applications open and close according to the competition cycle (next open: 2027-09-28; close: 2028-03-07). Eligible applicants apply through HHMI’s Investigator application process.
