AFR Doctoral Grants (Aide à la Formation-Recherche)

The AFR (Aide à la Formation-Recherche) doctoral grants are competitive research contracts from the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) of Luxembourg to support PhD candidates. The programme funds doctoral research across a broad range of disciplines, including sciences, technology, humanities and social sciences. Grants are awarded for research conducted within Luxembourg institutions or, in certain cases, for projects outside Luxembourg subject to nationality or degree restrictions. Funding is provided as a research employment contract for up to four years.

Gross monthly salary (~€3,350), full social security contributions, annual budget for scientific activities and conference fees, funded for a maximum of 4 years.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent enabling registration for a doctorate and propose a research project validated by a supervisor at a Luxembourg institution. For projects outside Luxembourg, candidates must be Luxembourg nationals or holders of a degree from a Luxembourg university. Excellence of academic record and project relevance are required.

The application dossier is prepared jointly by the candidate and supervisor and submitted officially via the FNR online portal by the host institution. Evaluation is by independent experts and final selection by an FNR committee.
