The program combines field visits to multiple islands with pedagogical workshops, lectures, and curriculum planning sessions led by Stanford faculty and local naturalist guides. It emphasizes translating field experiences into student-centered curricula and highlights social-ecological systems and social science perspectives alongside STEM content. The 2026 institute includes visits by chartered boat to five islands and sessions at or near the Charles Darwin Research Station.
