Expedition Grants

The Expedition Grants provide small-team grants for overseas scientific field research that addresses local needs and involves collaboration with local scientists, institutions or communities. Awards are aimed at teams based in universities, research institutes, museums or similar not-for-profit agencies, with the majority of applicants being students or recent graduates of UK universities. Grants support well-planned expeditions with attainable objectives, risk assessment and measures to minimise environmental impact.

A grant of up to £3,000

Applications are normally from small or medium-sized British expeditions; the team should comprise three or more members based in a university, research institute, museum or similar not-for-profit agency, with the majority of applicants being students or recent graduates of UK universities and studying subjects relevant to the expedition’s objectives. Preference is given to teams involving local counterparts and host-country support.

Complete the online application form on the Gilchrist Educational Trust website; trustees consider applications annually in April and successful applicants are notified in May.
