HHMI Gilliam Fellows Program

The HHMI Gilliam Fellows Program is an early-career fellowship that supports PhD students and their faculty thesis advisors as mentor-mentee pairs to advance biological and biomedical research and build inclusive training environments. Fellows receive up to three years of PhD stipend support, a discretionary allowance, and an institutional allowance to support tuition and fees, along with tailored professional development and community participation in HHMI meetings. Gilliam PhD Fellows who pursue academic research careers may apply for up to four additional years of postdoctoral support as Gilliam Postdoc Fellows. The program includes a year-long mentorship development course for advisors and access to HHMI Science Meetings and the Gilliam Annual Meeting.

Annual stipend, discretionary allowance, institutional allowance for tuition and fees, professional development programming, participation in Gilliam Annual Meeting and HHMI Science Meetings, mentorship development course for advisors; potential additional postdoctoral funding.

Second- and third-year PhD students in basic biological and biomedical sciences at an HHMI-eligible institution applying with their faculty PhD advisor; open to US citizens, US permanent residents, DACA recipients, and international students eligible to study at and receive funding from their institution. Dual-degree (MD-PhD, DVM-PhD, etc.) students who are eligible may apply.

Collaborative application submitted through HHMI’s Application and Review Channel (ARC); application is completed by the PhD student and their faculty PhD advisor and requires naming one additional reference.
