Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a U.S. Department of Defense-funded scholarship and workforce development program for students in approved STEM disciplines. It provides recipients with tuition support, annual stipends, health and book allowances, and paid summer internships at DoD laboratories or research facilities. Recipients must complete summer internships and accept post-graduation civilian employment with the Department of Defense. The program supports study in one of SMART’s approved STEM disciplines, including Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, and Cybersecurity.

Full tuition coverage, annual stipends, health and book allowances, and paid summer internships at Department of Defense labs or research facilities.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens pursuing a STEM degree in an approved SMART STEM discipline, willing to complete summer internships at a DoD lab or research facility, and willing to pursue civilian employment with the DoD upon graduation. Applicants must be enrolled at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university by the program start date; graduate students and incoming college freshmen who are not currently enrolled are still eligible to apply.
