University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Program 2025/2026

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Program brings early career faculty from African universities to Ann Arbor for a residency that supports a research project, academic degree, publications, grant proposals, or other scholarly activities. Scholars receive access to University of Michigan resources, a five-month residency, and a package of travel, housing, insurance, a research allowance, and a stipend. The program aims to strengthen African universities by integrating scholars into international networks and collaborations across disciplines.

Five months of residency with a faculty collaborator, round-trip airfare, free housing, medical insurance, a research allowance, a stipend for living costs, and office/laboratory space; opportunity to present research to the U-M community.

Direct applications are invited from faculty members at African universities in Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia; applicants from other African countries must be nominated by a University of Michigan faculty member.

Complete the online application form, upload a CV, upload a scholarly program/proposal, and arrange for a letter of support from the home institution; nomination is required for applicants not from specified countries.
