Bolyai János Research Scholarship

The Bolyai János Research Scholarship is a competitive, cohort-style research fellowship awarded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to support the writing of high-quality scientific work or equivalent creative research output and to prepare candidates for the MTA doctor title. It is awarded across all scientific fields to applicants who will conduct their research at a Hungarian research institution and provides a fixed-duration personal stipend for the fellow while affiliated at the host institution.

Monthly stipend (250,000 HUF as stated), fixed-term fellowship for 1–3 years, possibility to hold for up to two cycles, expected number of new awards in 2026: 155; requires at least 20 hours/week employment relationship at a Hungarian research institution during the fellowship.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) or have an institutional decision granting the degree at the time of application, must not already hold the MTA doctor title, and must be under 45 years of age on the application deadline (age limit extended by two years per dependent minor child). Applicants must intend to carry out their research at a Hungarian higher education or research institution and must provide a host institution acceptance statement; applications must be submitted in Hungarian.

Submit an electronic application via the Bolyai application portal with a completed application form, scientific CV, copy of doctoral diploma (or proof of doctoral council decision), host institution acceptance statement, AI use declaration and any child-based age allowance declaration; certain electronically signed documents must also be mailed in original when required.
