Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is a 10-week research and education program run by the College of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina. It places undergraduate trainees with graduate faculty mentors to conduct an individual investigative research project in the biomedical sciences and includes professional development activities. Participants are enrolled in a course (CGS 761) for academic credit and present their projects at a one-day colloquium. The program aims to prepare students for subsequent M.S., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. training.

Living allowance ($400/week, $4,000 total), $1,900 housing allowance, 15 credit hours on MUSC transcript (10 credits for returning students), faculty mentorship, professional development (research ethics, lectures, scientific writing), and presentation at SURP Colloquia.

Applicants must be enrolled full time and in good standing in an accredited bachelor's degree program, able to complete the entire 10 weeks, with minimum GPA 3.0 (3.2 preferred); priority given to rising juniors and seniors. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Applications accepted via the program application site; applicants provide an unofficial transcript, a ≥500-word personal statement, and two academic letters of recommendation (submitted via email link). Official transcripts required upon acceptance.
