In 2026, Gabriel joined a KEPLA basketball team summer camp in Rwanda and came away with selection among the five players chosen from the camp. The result placed him in the junior team, a clear step forward after three months of work and attention on court.

After the selection, he celebrated with his teammates before going home to share the news with his parents. The sequence mattered to him because it turned a camp experience into something more lasting.

A moment of recognition

Gabriel described the feeling in simple terms, comparing it with the kind of recognition that can change a young player’s view of his future. The reaction was not only about being chosen, but also about the sense that his effort had been seen.

He also said he had first celebrated with his team before taking the news home. That detail gives a sense of how the selection landed, with the camp ending in relief and excitement rather than uncertainty.

Gabriel was not placed in the main KEPLA team, yet he was selected for the junior team, which still marked him out from the rest of the camp. For any young player, that kind of distinction can build confidence and open the next stage of development.

His story is also grounded in family. He waited about two hours before getting home, then told his parents. The news was good, and that family moment formed part of the achievement as much as the selection itself.

What this route can look like

Gabriel’s path shows how a summer camp can become a real opportunity when a player is ready to be noticed. Selection did not come from a headline moment alone, but from months spent in the camp and enough consistency to stand out.

For readers looking for a route they could follow themselves, his experience suggests a practical lesson. Show up and stay involved, then treat each camp as a chance to earn trust. That is often where the next step begins.
