Friedrich Miescher Institute PhD and MD-PhD Programmes

The Friedrich Miescher Institute PhD and MD-PhD Programmes are selective doctoral and combined medical-doctoral training programmes in biomedical research, including neurobiology, genomic regulation and multicellular systems. They recruit an international cohort of researchers and provide laboratory-based research training under FMI group leaders. The programmes include application review, recommendation letters, and on-site interviews at the FMI in Basel.

Generous scholarship/salary covering living expenses in Switzerland; structured doctoral/MD-PhD research training and supervision at FMI.

PhD applicants must hold a university degree that formally qualifies for doctoral studies in their country (e.g. Master, Diploma or equivalent); a bachelor alone is not sufficient. MD-PhD applicants must have completed medical studies and hold a university degree qualifying for clinical practice or training in their country, ideally with documented laboratory research experience.

Complete the online registration via the FMI official platform using the specific PhD or MD-PhD form; provide contact details for at least one recommender (up to three recommended) whose letters are submitted via a direct link; applications are reviewed by group leaders and shortlisted candidates are invited for in-person interviews in Basel.
