University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) 2027-2028

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) is a fellowship program that invites early-career faculty from African universities to spend five months in residence at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, paired with a faculty collaborator, to advance a scholarly program or research project. Scholars receive round-trip travel, free housing, medical insurance, a research allowance, a living stipend, and access to U‑M resources and facilities. The program aims to strengthen African higher education by integrating participants into international academic networks and supporting their research and teaching activities.

Five-month residency in Ann Arbor with a faculty collaborator, full access to university resources, office or laboratory space, opportunity to present research to the U‑M community, and networking within international academic circles.

Be an early-career faculty member who has taught in higher education for fewer than ten years and is currently teaching at a college or university in Africa; must obtain an institutional endorsement from their home institution and be able to reside in Ann Arbor for five months.
