Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

A summer research program placing undergraduates in MRSEC faculty labs to conduct materials-focused projects. Participants receive safety and ethics training, attend seminars and guided tours, present a seminar and prepare a written report, and have access to University of Chicago facilities for the program duration. The program runs as a 9.5-week summer experience and includes interaction with graduate students and faculty.

Stipend ($7,000 for the 9.5-week program), modest travel reimbursement, safety and ethics training, seminars, guided tours of national labs and startups, opportunities to present research and prepare a written report, access to University libraries and athletic facilities.

Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in but not yet graduated from an accredited undergraduate college degree program with a concentration in a materials science–related field.
