NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP)

The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) is a funded scholarship for undergraduate students committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. It provides financial assistance of up to US$20,000 per academic year, paid summer research internships, mentorship, and professional development while scholars conduct research within NIH Intramural Research Laboratories. Scholarships are awarded for one academic year and may be renewed for up to two additional years. Recipients have a post-graduation service commitment to serve in the NIH Intramural Research Program for each year of funding received, which may be deferred for approved advanced degree study.

Up to $20,000 per academic year for tuition and educational expenses; paid 10-week summer research internship; paid full-time research employment after graduation with employee benefits; mentorship from NIH scientists; professional development, career advising, leadership development, access to NIH research facilities.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, enrolled or accepted as full-time undergraduates at an accredited four-year college or university, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 (or rank in top 5% of their class), demonstrate exceptional financial need certified by their university, and successfully complete a federal background check.

Submit a completed online application with academic records, CV/résumé, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, Exceptional Financial Need certification from university, and financial aid office contact information; eligible applicants undergo screening, scientific review and virtual interviews for shortlisted candidates.
