Work with Brazilian researchers: NERC–FAPESP lead agency

A bilateral lead-agency arrangement enabling collaborative research proposals between UK-based researchers and researchers in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Applications are submitted under existing NERC funding opportunities (notably the NERC Pushing the Frontiers scheme) and undergo a single joint review process. NERC funds the UK component and FAPESP funds the São Paulo component of eligible collaborative projects. Projects must fall within the remit of both agencies and comply with the funding limits and durations of the chosen NERC opportunity.

Collaborative research grant funding covering staff, travel, consumables, allocated and indirect costs for the UK component (80% FEC) and equipment at 100% FEC; FAPESP-funded costs for São Paulo participants via SAGe.

UK-based applicants must be based at an eligible organisation and apply as project lead through NERC. São Paulo-based applicants must be affiliated with FAPESP-eligible higher education or non-profit research organisations, confirm eligibility with FAPESP and obtain a formal letter of confirmation. Collaborative proposals must be within the remit of both NERC and FAPESP and be submitted to the relevant NERC funding opportunity.

Submit a collaborative research proposal to the relevant NERC funding opportunity (e.g. Pushing the Frontiers). São Paulo project leads must register and submit via FAPESP's SAGe system and obtain confirmation; UK project leads must be eligible under NERC and register in SAGe as Partner PI as required.
