Mercator Sapiens Stimulus

The Mercator Sapiens Stimulus is a large monetary stimulus awarded to individual mid-career researchers to investigate a single important scientific question. Beginning in 2027 the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW), funded by the Stichting Hartwig Foundation, will award two stimuli each year of €1,000,000 each: one for the humanities and social sciences and one for the medical and natural sciences. Recipients present their research question and project at a formal award ceremony.

The Stimulus is intended for talented mid-career researchers working in the Netherlands with a permanent appointment at a Dutch university or research institute. Nominations may be submitted by KHMW scientific and societal members and by rectors of Dutch universities.

Candidates are put forward by KHMW scientific and societal members and by rectors of Dutch universities; nominations are submitted annually by email to the KHMW secretariat (addressed to the named secretaries).
