Information

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowships invite research proposals from scholars in all disciplines of the humanities and interpretive social sciences. The 2025-26 competition will award up to 60 fellowships to scholars across all career stages, with about half supporting early-career scholars. The program supports substantial research and writing projects with a stipend of up to $60,000 for a 12-month fellowship, plus potential supplements for costs incurred during the term.

Eligibility

Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, Indigenous individuals residing in the United States through specific statuses, or eligible non-citizens who have been living in the US for at least three years prior to the deadline; must have earned a PhD in the humanities or interpretive social sciences (or demonstrate equivalent scholarly experience); must devote six to twelve months to full-time research and writing; and must be able to initiate and complete the project within the designated period.

Applications must be submitted online with a formal proposal, work plan, bibliography, publications list, personal statement, and writing sample; reference letters are not accepted in this competition year.
