Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) and MRC UK Worldwide 2026

Information

The AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme is a funded leadership development programme for emerging African scientists. It runs with a sequence of residential and virtual workshops, webinars and online resources to help participants compete for major funding opportunities and lead their own research groups.

Benefits

Two residential workshops (opening and closing), one virtual workshop, supplementary webinars and online resources, baseline and end-of-programme assessments and collaborative opportunities.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of an African country, employed in Africa by a recognized university or research institution, and at an early stage of leading their own research group with a recent PhD/DPhil/MD or equivalent (or a medical qualification plus a research-relevant Master’s).
