Information

The Alexander von Humboldt-Professur is Germany's most highly endowed research prize awarded to leading researchers to enable long-term, future-oriented research at German universities and research institutions. The professorship provides substantial funding over a standard seven-year period and supports the personal remuneration of the laureate as well as the financial resources for their research. It is intended for internationally leading researchers who are working abroad and who could be appointed to a professorship in Germany. Up to ten Humboldt Professorships are awarded each year, and since 2026 enhanced funding of up to 10 million euros is possible under the 1,000-Köpfe-Plus programme.

Eligibility

Nominations may be submitted by German universities (and jointly by non-university research institutions with an eligible university). Nominees must be internationally leading, outstanding researchers who are active abroad and who would be appointable to a professorship in Germany.

Application

Nominations are submitted online by eligible German institutions via the foundation's online nomination form; nominations should be routed via rectors/presidents or equivalent bodies and include required documents.
