Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Stipendium

The Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Stipendium is a postgraduate scholarship awarded for outstanding artistic achievement to mainly freelance visual artists. Three to five scholarships are awarded every two years, each initially for one year with possible extension to a second year. Benefits include a monthly stipend, a group exhibition at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and a catalogue production, and inclusion in the Studienstiftung with access to its educational events.

Applicants must be visual artists who are exclusively or predominantly freelance; German citizens (or educational in-country), citizens of an EU or EU accession country, or non-EU citizens with permanent residence permission (subject to individual review). Applicants must have completed the majority of their studies in Germany and have their main residence in Germany; studies must be completed by the start of the scholarship and the final degree must be no older than five years. Suggested maximum age at nomination is 35 (exceptions possible). Applicants working exclusively in applied arts or music are not eligible.

Candidates must be nominated; nominators include approx. 50 invited personalities from the art field, all state-recognised art colleges in Germany, and former stipend holders. Selection is two-stage with jury preselection and a main selection featuring a jury review and public 'Open House'.
