The Young Explorer Program selects a cohort of emerging leaders aged 18–25 to recognize and invest in changemakers working across National Geographic Society focus areas. Each year the Society selects 15 Young Explorers who receive a monetary award, training, networking opportunities, and access to additional project funding. Participants work in areas including scientific innovation, conservation, education, community engagement and storytelling. Awardees are chosen through a competitive, multi-tiered nomination and application process.

Eligibility
