NERC Urgency Funding

NERC Urgency Funding supports rapid-response environmental research to collect critical early data following transient, unexpected natural events such as earthquakes, floods, droughts or ephemeral ecosystem events. Projects can request up to £100,000 full economic cost (FEC) and may last up to one year. Funding is intended to support urgent data collection and essential initial analysis only, with a clear strategy for follow-on research.

Research project funding (up to £100,000 FEC, with NERC funding up to 80%); funding for NERC facilities costs where applicable; support for urgent data collection and initial analysis for up to one year.

Project leads or co-leads must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for NERC funding. Applicants cannot have been project lead or co-lead on another full application to this scheme in the previous two years. Overseas organisations are not funded except for specific costs for project co-leads from Norway; other international collaborators may be included as project partners.

Submit an application through UKRI's apply-for-funding process; project outline must be submitted within four weeks of the event start date and evidence the event start date.
