The Hooks National Book Award is an annual prize administered by the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis. It recognizes a non-fiction book published in 2024 that furthers understanding of civil rights or social justice issues, with a cash prize and an invitation to present at the university in the following academic year.

Benefits

Cash prize of $1,000 and an invitation to deliver an address at the University of Memphis as part of the Hooks Institute Lecture Series during the 2025-26 academic year.

Eligibility

Non-fiction books with a first-published date in 2024 are eligible. Works focusing on civil rights or social justice issues are eligible. Revised editions are not eligible. Nomination requires full contact information for authors and nominators and one copy of the nominated book.

Application

Submit one copy of the nominated book and provide full contact information for the author(s) and nominator(s); nominations must be postmarked by December 31, 2024; contact email is provided for nomination information.
