Estimating the Global Burden of Diarrheal Diseases

Grant
Grand Challenges (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) Worldwide 2026

Information

This Grand Challenges request for proposals (RFP) invites proposals to generate independent, policy-relevant estimates of the global burden of diarrheal diseases, focusing on mortality and morbidity in children under five in low- and middle-income countries. Supported projects should produce country-specific total and pathogen-attributed mortality estimates centered on 2025, and where feasible include morbidity estimates, uncertainty intervals, and technical documentation. The scope may be single-country, regional, LMIC-wide, or global, with preference for geographies with highest diarrheal mortality or high programmatic relevance.

Eligibility

Organizations with strong epidemiologic and quantitative modeling capabilities; proposals may come from teams able to produce credible, transparent, decision-useful burden estimates and provide technical documentation. Preference for work focused on geographies with high diarrheal mortality (including but not limited to India, Nigeria, and sub-Saharan Africa).

Application

Submit a proposal following the Application Instructions and full RFP documentation provided on the challenge page; supporting documents include terms and conditions, rules and guidelines, and FAQ. A webinar (May 14, 2026) was provided for applicants.
