BHF career re-entry route for Discovery and Clinical Fellowships

Fellowship
British Heart Foundation Worldwide 2026

Information

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is opening several fellowship schemes to researchers returning from a career break of at least six months. Eligible applicants may apply to Discovery Research Early Career, Discovery Research Future Leaders, Discovery Research Senior, Clinical Future Leaders and Clinical Senior Research Fellowship schemes via the career re-entry route. Applications can be made during the career break or after return to work; career breaks will be taken into account when assessing eligibility and competitiveness. BHF also partners with the Daphne Jackson Trust to provide part-time career returner fellowships after longer breaks.

Eligibility

Applicants should be successful postdoctoral researchers coming from a career break of a minimum of six months. Applications can be made during the career break or following return to work; if made after returning they should typically be within six months and no later than 12 months. Existing entry requirements for each fellowship scheme apply, and time-based eligibility criteria for fellowship schemes do not include career breaks. For clinician scientists, a period of full-time clinical work does not qualify as a career break.

Application

Complete the online application form for the relevant BHF fellowship scheme and indicate that the applicant is returning from a career break, providing details of the break, research experience and a statement of motivation and re-entry plans.
