American Philosophical Society Worldwide 2026

Information

The Phillips Fund for Native American Research provides small grants to support research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans in the continental United States and Canada. Grants are intended to cover research costs such as travel, audio and video recordings, and consultants' fees. Awards are normally for one year and recipients are expected to provide a brief report and to deposit relevant materials with the American Philosophical Society Library. The committee does not fund projects in archaeology, ethnography, psycholinguistics, or the purchase of permanent equipment or pedagogical materials.

Benefits

Monetary grant averaging about $3,000 (maximum $3,500) to cover research-related expenses; one-year award period; expectation of deposit of research materials with the APS Library.

Eligibility

The committee prefers to support younger scholars who have received the doctorate; applications are also accepted from graduate students for research on master’s theses or doctoral dissertations. Applicants conducting research with Indigenous communities should provide information on contacts and consultation/ethical arrangements.

Application

Apply online via the American Philosophical Society application portal; letters of support are submitted through the portal and are due on the application deadline.
