Information

The Mesopotamian Fellowship is a competitive research fellowship supporting field and archival research on ancient Mesopotamian culture. ASOR plans to award two fellowships for 2026–2027, one of $9,000 (supporting three months to a year of research and including $1,000 for Annual Meeting travel/registration) and one of $4,000 (intended to support researchers from within the region and without Annual Meeting travel support). Projects may include fieldwork in the Middle East or travel to work on museum collections and archives, and projects with local engagement are especially welcome. Fellowship time should be continuous and the award may be used only for allowable direct expenses; indirect/overhead costs are not permitted.

Benefits

Stipend of $9,000 (one award) or $4,000 (one award); $1,000 of the $9,000 is allocated for ASOR Annual Meeting travel/registration; research support for three months to a year.

Eligibility

Pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars from any country may apply; applicants must be ASOR members or affiliated with an institution that is an institutional member of ASOR. Scholars from the Middle East are especially encouraged to apply.

Application

Submit a coversheet, a short proposal (max 1,500 words plus one-page bibliography), and two recommendation letters; applications and recommendation letters should be submitted as .docx or .pdf attachments to Marta Ostovich at programs@asor.org.
