The ARISE Scholarships provide fellowships to support doctoral study in public mental health at two South African universities (University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University). The programme aims to strengthen capacity for mental health research across Africa, with funding for PhD study and research costs covered by the programme. The fellowship is targeted at South African candidates (or those with permanent resident status) who intend to pursue a research/academic career in public mental health and are able to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Benefits

Annual fellowship value of R300 000 plus coverage of research costs; four-year tenure contingent on progress; residency requirements at the respective universities during the fellowship.

Eligibility

South African candidates (or candidates with permanent resident status in South Africa) with a prior master’s degree in a relevant field; committed to a research/academic career in public mental health.
