Information

A student hackathon run as part of Chemeca 2026 where teams develop conceptual designs to decarbonise iron and steel production or improve energy/fuel infrastructure efficiency. The competition has an initial remote round with submission of a short 2-page (or 1 A3) document and a 3–5 minute video, and finalists present in person at the Chemeca 2026 conference in Melbourne. Prizes include mentoring with sponsors and cash awards per team member for top-placed teams.

Benefits

Mentoring with Hackathon sponsors; cash prizes per team member (AUD $500, $350, $200 for 1st–3rd respectively); opportunity to present to industry judges and finalists invited to pitch at Chemeca 2026.

Eligibility

Open to undergraduate, masters or PhD students (maximum two PhD students per team) studying Chemical Engineering; teams may include up to two members from other disciplines. Only students from Australian or New Zealand universities may compete.

Application

Teams of 4–6 register interest via the organisers' registration form and submit a short document (max two A4 pages or one A3) and a 3–5 minute video for first-round entry by the stated entry deadline; finalists will be invited to present in person and given details on conference registration.
