South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) South Africa 2026

Information

A legal essay writing competition run by the South African Law Reform Commission to generate ideas for law reform and to honour contributions to South African constitutional jurisprudence. It is open to students studying towards an LLB or LLM at a South African university and invites essays on topics relating to modernisation, improvement, development or reform of any aspect of South African law. Essays must be 4,000 to 6,000 words, submitted in English, and will be judged by a SALRC-appointed panel. Prizes include vouchers for winners and runners-up and credit vouchers for supervisors.

Benefits

Winners (LLB and LLM categories) receive a R20 000 Incredible Connection voucher; supervisors of each winner receive a R2 500 Juta credit voucher. Runners-up (LLB and LLM) receive a R10 000 Incredible Connection voucher; supervisors of each runner-up receive a R2 500 Juta credit voucher.

Eligibility

Open to registered LLB and LLM students at a South African university or tertiary institution in any year of study; PhD students are not eligible. Abridged versions of completed Masters dissertations will be accepted.

Submit essay (MS Word or PDF) by email to Reform@justice.gov.za and copy ADzebu@justice.gov.za including name, contact number & email, institution, category (LLB or LLM) and word count.
