A post-doctoral fellowship jointly run by the Japan Foundation and the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia (Tobunken), University of Tokyo, to support research on Japanese Studies from an Asian context. Fellows are invited to conduct residence-based research at Tobunken, take part in operation and management of meetings or workshops, and build international networks. Fellowships run for a minimum of six months up to 24 months, with proposed commencement between 2026-09-01 and 2027-03-01.
Benefits
Round-trip (or one-way) airfare, settling-in allowance, departure allowance, overseas travel insurance, monthly stipend of JPY 400,000, dependent allowance JPY 10,000 per certified person.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at time of application received within six years as of 2026-04-01; hold nationality or lawful permanent resident status in countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan (Taiwan and Palestine may apply); be in good health and proficient in Japanese or English; and in principle be able to stay continuously in Japan for the term of the Fellowship.
