Information

The SURF program provides undergraduate students with hands-on summer research experience at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) across its laboratories and offices. Participants work full time (40 hours per week) under world-class mentors on research projects related to the NIST mission. The program runs in various 9- and 11-week formats during the summer. Participants receive a weekly stipend and may receive limited housing and travel assistance.

$7,810 stipend (11-week), limited housing assistance up to $4,500, travel assistance up to $500, hands-on research experience and mentorship at NIST laboratories

Eligibility

Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident and a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited two-year or four-year U.S. college; must be at least 18 years old. First-year undergraduates and graduating seniors are eligible. Participants must pass a background check and provide proof of health insurance.
