Astronomy for Africa: Student Support for Astronomy Modules via Distance Learning

🏛 IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU OAD) 📍 South Africa · Online 📅 2026

About this opportunity

A pilot project to support African students who wish to study astronomy but whose home universities do not offer astronomy courses. Students remain registered at their home university for physics and mathematics courses while registering for astronomy modules via distance learning at the University of South Africa (UNISA). The project proposes to fund UNISA fees for selected students so those modules can count as electives toward a BSc at the home university where agreements exist.

Benefits & funding

Payment of UNISA fees for astronomy modules (for supported students).

Eligibility

Students across Africa who are enrolled at a university in their home country that does not offer astronomy courses, and who can register for UNISA distance-learning astronomy modules that may be recognised by their home university.

How to apply

Contact the project (contact listed as Anja Schroeder) to enquire about support and registration for UNISA distance-learning modules.
