About this opportunity

The SALT-SAAO Scholarship supports MSc and PhD studies in astronomy and instrumentation, including observational and theoretical astrophysics and computer modelling. Awards are made for the 2026–2027 academic year and are intended for students registered at a South African university. The scholarship funds tuition and provides support for travel, equipment and possible on-site accommodation. A maximum of two scholarships will be awarded at each study level.

Benefits & funding

Annual stipend (R180,000 for MSc; R190,000 for PhD), tuition fee coverage, travel and equipment support, possible on-site accommodation; scholars must spend at least 60% time at SAAO and submit annual progress reports.

Eligibility

Preference will be given to South African citizens and permanent residents in South Africa, but students of any nationality can apply. Applicants must be eligible to register for MSc or PhD studies in astrophysics in 2026-2027 at a South African university and have an appropriate background (BSc Hons for MSc; MSc or upgrade approval for PhD).

Two referees must send reference letters directly to SAAO via the same email address with the applicant’s name in the subject line.
