Young Linguist Award

🏛 Southern African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society 📍 Worldwide 📅 2026

About this opportunity

An annual award given to the young linguist presenting the best first-time, single-authored paper at the annual SALALS conference. "Young" is interpreted in terms of experience presenting papers rather than age. The winner receives a certificate, is posted on the SALALS website, and is admitted as a SALALS member for one year without a subscription fee.

Benefits & funding

Certificate posted to the winner; the award is posted on the SALALS website; one-year SALALS membership without subscription fee.

Eligibility

First-time presenters of single-authored papers at the annual conference; presenters should identify themselves at Registration. If the conference is joint with other associations, young linguists affiliated with those associations also qualify. Membership of SALALS is not required.

How to apply

Identify yourself as a first-time single-authored presenter to conference organisers at registration (self-nomination). Presentations are evaluated by the session chair (and sometimes a senior SALALS member); evaluation sheets are submitted anonymously to the SALALS executive which decides the award.
