IRE Freelance Fellowship

The Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Freelance Fellowship is a funded programme for freelance journalists to develop nonfiction projects such as books, documentaries, or long-form pieces. It offers two award levels with monetary grants and professional support to help produce impact-driven investigations primarily for U.S. audiences. The fellowship supports both long-form and shorter-term work, with accompanying membership and legal reporting services.

Monetary award (up to $2,000 or $4,000), one-year IRE membership, two-hour consulting for reporting and legal services, and eligibility for publication or broadcast support.

Open to journalists who work as freelancers and plan to publish or air the work primarily in the U.S. or for outlets with a substantial American audience.

Submit project description and supporting materials as specified (three clips, freelance status explanation, project plan, publication/broadcast plans, and prior contracts if applicable).
