Information

The Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards is a funded fellowship for emerging African scholars studying violence related to the African continent. Approximately a dozen fellows are selected every two years to conduct research projects with mentoring and opportunities to present findings, including a sponsorship to an international conference and a fieldwork grant.

Benefits

Fieldwork research grant of $10,000, in-person methods workshop on the African continent, mentoring from senior scholars, and sponsorship to present findings at an international conference, plus editorial and publication assistance through a writing workshop.

Eligibility

Applicants must be aged 45 or younger, currently enrolled in an accredited PhD program at an African higher-education institution, and residing on the African continent with a research proposal related to violence in Africa.

Create an account on the HFG application portal, prepare and submit your research proposal and required documents, and apply online between 1 December 2026 and 1 March 2027.
