Next generation artificial intelligence (AI): explainable AI

A UKRI funding opportunity to support speculative, high-risk fundamental research that could deliver a step change in the explainability of future AI systems. Projects are intended to be small-scale, rapid, and potentially transformative, strengthening UK capability in explainable AI and broadening access to strategic AI funding. The programme will invest up to £10 million over two years and is a pilot under the UKRI IS8 AI Programme.

Research grant funding (up to 80% of FEC, up to £482,000); project start date fixed and up to 24 months duration; access to UKRI support and networks.

Applicants must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding. Applications are particularly welcomed from early and mid-career researchers. International researchers may apply only as project co-leads in specific bilateral agreements.

Applications submitted through the UKRI/EPSRC application process via the specified UKRI funding service; applicants must follow UKRI standard eligibility and apply from an eligible UK research organisation.
