Hans-Böckler-Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

The Hans-Böckler-Foundation Doctoral Scholarship provides financial support to doctoral candidates across all disciplines who demonstrate strong academic ability and trade-union or socio-political engagement. The scholarship supports full-time work on a doctorate, includes a monthly stipend and additional allowances, and is awarded for a regular funding period of three years with possible extensions in justified cases. Recipients also participate in an ideational support programme of seminars, workshops and networking activities provided by the Foundation.

Monthly stipend (€1,750 from WS 2025/2026: €1,650 basic + €100 research allowance), possible health insurance subsidy (up to €100), possible family allowance, three-year funding period (extendable in justified cases), access to over 100 seminars, workshops and study trips as part of the Foundation's ideational support programme.

Scientifically highly qualified and trade-unionally or socio-politically engaged doctoral candidates of all fields. An official proof of the degree qualifying for doctoral studies is required. Certain previous funding or very advanced stage of the doctorate can make applicants ineligible; part-time employment and certain combinations of activities are not permitted.

Submit an online application with required documents including exposé, referees' statements and official proof of the degree qualifying for doctoral studies. Selected applications are reviewed and may involve assessor reports and interviews. The scholarship must be commenced within four months of acceptance.
