Information

The Whiting Nonfiction Grant for Works-in-Progress awards multiyear project support to writers completing deeply researched, book-length nonfiction intended for a general adult readership. Ten writers will receive grants to support projects that are at a mid-stage of production and under contract with a publisher. The program funds research, writing, and living-related expenses to help shape the final work.

Benefits

$40,000 grant to each of ten writers; support intended for living expenses (rent/mortgage, household bills, childcare, health insurance), research/travel and manuscript-improvement costs (factcheckers, editors, translators, transcribers, honoraria, travel), and other writing-related expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a book under contract with a publisher based in the US, UK, or Canada by May 31, 2026; the book must be at a mid-stage of production and intended for a general adult audience. Self-published books and certain categories (self-help, historical fiction, textbooks, primarily academic works, and books for young readers) are ineligible.

Application

Apply via the online application form (Submittable) and submit the publisher contract, original proposal, up to 15,000 words of draft chapters, a statement of remaining work, a plan for use of funds, resume, and letters of recommendation by the deadline.
