The Public Scholars Initiative at the University of British Columbia supports doctoral students who want to connect their research to areas of public benefit. It provides funding and opportunities to conduct projects with public engagement and impact, including a research allowance and potential renewal funding, along with mentorship and networking opportunities.
Benefits
Up to $10,000 for research and professional development, potential renewal of up to $10,000, networking, mentorship, and public engagement opportunities.
Eligibility
Applicants must be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of 1 September 2025, in years 1–5 (exceptional cases in year 6), and have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study by 31 August 2025; Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students enrolled in eligible UBC doctoral programs may apply.
Application
Applications open 23 March 2026 and close 22 May 2026; application materials include a proposal submitted via the Qualtrics page and supervisor letters of support according to the provided instructions.
