Student grants and loans (CSN)

🏛 Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) 📍 Sweden 📅 2026

About this opportunity

Student grants and loans administered by the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) provide financial support for studies at compulsory, upper secondary, post-secondary and higher education levels in Sweden. Support is available as a non-repayable grant and as a repayable student loan with a low interest rate. The amounts vary by study rate (full-time/part-time), number of weeks of study and income, and there are additional allowances for childcare and other qualifying costs. Special rules apply for foreign citizens and for studying abroad.

Benefits & funding

Non-repayable grant and a student loan (amounts vary by study rate and weeks); additional child allowance and supplementary/additional loans available in certain cases.

Eligibility

Entitlement depends on the education granting student finance, registration on courses, study rate (at least 50% and minimum three weeks), age under 60 (with borrowing decreasing from age 51), and other conditions such as income limits; special conditions apply for foreign citizens (e.g. permanent residence permit and living in Sweden).

How to apply

Apply to CSN via its services and application portal; CSN assesses entitlement and income limits and issues decisions.
